In the year 1966, a new chapter in Auckland’s history began. Located in downtown Auckland, a clothing venture was launched under the name “Banbury Cross,” which would later evolve into the brand we now know as Cloke Clothing.

Their humble headquarters was a compact warehouse, perched atop Queen Street. Space was limited, comprising only a cutting table, fabric racks, and a few shelves for finished garments. Creature comforts were scarce, with a kettle and a jar of instant coffee serving as the epitome of luxury. Without a refrigerator for milk, coffee was served black and strong, no exceptions.

Despite the confined workspace and occasional clutter, a spirit of creativity and an unwavering commitment to quality thrived. Banbury Cross swiftly established itself as a trusted producer of high-quality children’s clothing.

As the years unfolded, the clothing industry experienced unprecedented transformations. Banbury Cross adapted, sometimes leading the way, other times striving to keep pace. However, their resilience and ability to evolve kept them in the forefront of the industry.

The Queen Street warehouse, once a bustling center of creativity, has since become a historical memory. Cloke Clothing now calls Invercargill home. While much of their manufacturing takes place abroad, they meticulously ensure that it meets the same high standards outlined in their purpose.
